Florida Tech’s Elmore Is Outstanding Psychologist of the Year

– Dr. Richard T. Elmore Jr., Florida Tech associate professor of psychology, was presented with the Outstanding Psychologist of the Year award by the
Brevard/Indian River chapter of the Florida Psychological Association. The presentation was made at the chapter’s annual Officer Installation and Awards
Dinner, held in late February at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club.

Elmore was cited for his many years of community service, providing combat readjustment counseling since 1987 to Vietnam veterans and their families in
Brevard County. Initially, he developed a network of 12 local psychological services providers through a Dept. of Veterans Affairs contract and obtained a
grant from the Agent Orange Class Assistance Program.

In 1991, Elmore established the Center for Traumatology Studies within the School of Psychology, which has provided counseling, education, research and
consultation services on combat readjustment issues. His research has produced 38 papers presented at annual meetings of the Southeastern Psychological
Association and American Psychological Association.

“Combat veterans, though praised during war for their bravery and service to their country, are often forgotten afterwards. The center has attempted to
address the important post-war emotional readjustment needs of local combat veterans,” said Elmore.

Elmore and dozens of clinical psychology doctoral students, over the years, have worked to benefit Brevard County and the many combat veterans who live in
the county.
