Pikes Fraternity Members Build Ramps for Disabled

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Pi Kappa Alpha (Pikes) fraternity brothers gathering in Austin, Texas, on July 28 for their annual convention, will reunite beforehand for community service. Florida Institute of Technology Pikes are leading the way in the Texas Ramp Project, the official community service project of the convention.

Alumni from the Zeta Sigma chapter at Florida Tech will ramp up the effort to help the disabled get in and out of their homes. The project’s tagline is “Building freedom for the homebound.”

Florida Tech alumni John McLellan, Michael Fladmark, Chip Heflich and Joe Zinser will coordinate four work teams anchored by Florida Tech student chapter members and other student chapter volunteers to build ramps for deserving clients. The four reside in the Dallas area.

The project has grown since 1985 when the Kiwanis Club of Richardson, Texas, began building ramps with a network of supporters across the state, including Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity members.

Pi Kappa Alpha was founded at the University of Virginia in 1868 and has grown to an international brotherhood composed of more than 250,000 members, 225 chapters and 140 alumni associations.
