Band Presents Hard-Swinging Beats With South African Jazz Dec. 1

MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Florida Institute of Technology’s Jazz Big Band, Panther Jazz, will channel the sounds of South African music in its Dec. 1 concert, “Scions of Africa: Jazz with African Essence.”

Panther Jazz, a hard-swinging big band with a lot of energy, will present some of the exciting new jazz sounds of South Africa. The performance is a fusion of traditional Marabi styles and American swing.

“Warning,” said Jamie Younkin, music director. “This concert is not smooth jazz. The audience should prepare to be taken on a fast-paced musical journey from Melbourne to Cape Town.”

The free concert will be in the Denius Student Center’s Hartley Room on campus at 5 p.m. For more information, call Younkin at (321) 674- 7320, or e-mail music@fit.edu.
