Foosaner Art Museum’s Free Museum Monday Features Polaroid Manipulations Feb. 27

MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Foosaner Art Museum’s Museum Monday, Feb. 27, at 10 a.m., features fine art photographer Rene Griffith, a former consultant for Polaroid, Griffith now works out of her home studio in Indialantic, Fla.

Griffith not only “paints with light,” but also paints, draws and sculpts directly on Polaroid films using hand tools to move the emulsion for interesting effects. She expresses herself in photography that evokes painterly qualities.

“I’ve been told that I’m a photographer with the soul of a painter,” Griffith said. “It is more important to reflect a mood or feeling than to capture photographic detail.”

At the event, Griffith will show samples of her SX-70 Polaroid manipulations, and image and emulsion transfers, including many created with a vintage 1972 Polaroid camera.

Griffith’s photographs are sold worldwide through fine art publishers such as New York Graphics Society and local shops such as the Fifth Avenue Art Gallery in Melbourne, Fla. Her work can also be purchased on her website, http://www.renegriffith.com.

In 1989, Griffith received a bachelor’s degree in communication from Florida Institute of Technology and, in 1992, a master’s degree in business and technology from the University of Miami. She also graduated from Cay Lang’s Taking the Leap, a business school for artists, in Emeryville, Calif. Her interests include teaching art marketing, promotion, and web design classes, which help artists learn the business side of art.

Museum Monday is a community outreach program that focuses on art and creativity in various forms. Sponsored by the Guild of the Foosaner Art Museum, the free programs are held in the Harris Community Auditorium at 10 a.m. on the third Monday, January through May. Light refreshments are served.
