Professor to Conduct Global Leadership Workshop at HR Florida Conference, Orlando, Aug. 26

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Institute of Technology Professor Richard Griffith will conduct a global leadership workshop at the HR Florida State Conference & Expo in Orlando on Aug. 26 at the Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando. HR Florida is the annual conference of the HR Florida State Council, a state affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).

Each year the event attracts 1,500-plus human resources professionals and vendors throughout the state and across the nation. The workshop will focus on acquiring the skills necessary to effectively lead in an increasing international business environment.

“When executives first work with overseas partners they naturally rely on the leadership skills that have been successful in the past. Leadership, however, is expressed differently around the world, and followers have culturally influenced expectations about how their leaders should behave,” said Griffith, director of The Institute for Cross-Cultural Management at Florida Tech.

He adds: “For instance, a leader in Russia is expected to be much more direct than a leader in the U.S. A leader in the U.S. may be successful empowering workers through participative management, but that style of leadership would be seen as weak and ineffective in Russia. Leaders in the U.S. may use an informal approach to build relationships with their followers, but this approach would confuse followers in Brazil. One size does not fit all when it comes to leadership.”

Griffith is editor of the upcoming books, The Age of Internationalization and Leading Global Teams: Translating the Multidisciplinary Science to Practice. His work has been featured in Time magazine and The Wall Street Journal.
