Florida Tech Invites Community to be Lifelong Scholars in Six-Part Lecture Series Beginning Sept. 10
MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Florida Institute of Technology Lifelong Scholar Society announces a diverse, six-part, fall lecture series starting Sept. 10. Lectures are open to the public and suitable for any adult seeking the college experience without the homework and stress. Lecturers include a former NASA astronaut, and noted scientists and professors.
The presentations will be held late afternoon and early evening two Tuesdays a month, September-November, at the Harris Community Auditorium, adjacent to Florida Tech’s Foosaner Art Museum.
The first lecture, Sept. 10, 4-5:30 p.m., is “Grab Your Swimsuit: What Global Change Means for Florida,” presented by George Maul, head of the Department of Marine and Environmental Systems.
Subsequent lectures are: Sept. 24, “Seagrasses of the Indian River Lagoon System: Limitations after 100 Million Years of Adaptation,” presented by Dick Turner, professor of biological sciences, 6-7:30 p.m.; Oct. 8, “Bird Art through the Centuries: Humans Conveying Their Love of Birds,” by Juanita Baker, professor emerita (psychology), 4-5:30 p.m.; Oct. 22, “Beautiful, Romantic and Dead: Why Keats and Shelley Are Better than Twilight,” presented by Chris Frongillo, assistant professor, School of Arts and Communication, 6-7:30 p.m.; Nov. 5, “Distinguishing the Various Styles of Jazz,” presented by former astronaut and senior vice president for external relations and economic development Winston Scott, 6-7:30 p.m.; and Nov. 19, “Extreme Vision in a Blue World,” presented by Michael Grace, associate dean of the College of Science, 6-7:30 p.m.
Tickets for each lecture are $20, or $15 with coupon code FALL05. The six-lecture series may be purchased in its entirety for $90. Tickets include a slice of freshly baked pie from Joan’s Perfect Pies located in downtown Eau Gallie; refreshments will be served during the 30-minute discussion segment.
