Florida Tech/Harris Ethics Conference to Focus on Sports Management
April 15 Event on FIT Campus Features Local, National Experts
MELBOURNE, FLA. — Ethical and leadership challenges in sports medicine and women’s professional sports, and a panel discussion featuring community leaders with sports management experience, highlight the 2014 Ethics & Leadership Conference hosted by Florida Institute of Technology Bisk College of Business and Harris Corp. on April 15.
The free, public event runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hartley Room in the Denius Student Center on the Florida Tech campus. Seating is limited and registration is required by emailing Lyn Chilcote at chilcote@fit.edu. Registration deadline is April 11.
Dr. Bruce Thomas, medical director for the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and senior medical consultant and spring training physician for the Washington Nationals professional baseball team, will lead things off with his talk, “Current Sports Medicine Issues and Answers,” from 8:15-9 a.m.
That is followed by the presentation “Legal, Ethical and Leadership Challenges in Women’s Professional Sports.” Running from 9-9:45 a.m., this discussion features Mindy Moore, senior vice president of tournament regulations and international player services for the LPGA and former LPGA Rookie of the Year. Also participating is Elizabeth (Libba) Galloway, executive director of the Professional Association of Athlete Development Specialists and adjunct professor of sports law and governance at Florida Coastal Law School, Stetson University and the University of North Florida.
From 10-11:15 a.m. is the panel discussion, “Sports Management Personal Experiences: Issues and Answers.” Moderated by William Potter, chairman of Health First Holmes Regional Center and Health First Palm Bay Board of Directors, the panel consists of Brian Binggeli, Brevard Public Schools superintendent and a high school football and hockey coach; Tom Dooley, head basketball coach at Melbourne Central Catholic High School; Wayne Ivey, Brevard County sheriff and high school wrestling coach; Mike McNees, Melbourne city manager, former CEO and CEO of USA Track and Field, high school basketball coach; and Tom Wasdin, head basketball coach at Jacksonville University, 1970-73; 2009 inductee, University of Florida of Florida College of Health & Human Performance Alumni Hall of Fame; 2010 inductee, Jacksonville University Athletics Hall of Fame.
The final session, from 11:30 a.m. to noon, features the winning team from the 18th Annual High School Business Ethics Competition.
Lunch will be provided from noon to 12:45 p.m.
