Funk Center Presents Sequel to Art Quilts Exhibit

Opening May 24, Florida in Fabric II Features Quilts from Florida Artists

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts at Florida Institute of Technology will present Florida in Fabric II, the sequel to its successful juried exhibition of art quilts, from May 24 through Aug. 23.

Featuring 35 original quilts created by Florida artists, the exhibit was curated by Martha Sielman, executive director of Studio Art Quilt Associates, an international organization representing 3,100 members in 32 countries.

Florida in Fabric II seeks to promote an appreciation of quilt making as an art form while providing Florida quilters an opportunity to display their quilts in the state’s premier textile arts center. Art accepted for this exhibition exemplifies innovation in quilting and surface design techniques as well as excellence in artistic composition and craftsmanship.

In conjunction with Florida in Fabric II, the Funk Center will also present “Oil Stains,” a quilt series by Florida artist Eleanor McCain that features nine quilts representing the effects of the 2010 BP oil spill on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

To celebrate the exhibits’ opening, Sielman will present a free gallery talk at the Funk Center at 1 p.m. on May 24. In addition, the Center will present several exhibit-related programs, including a children’s “Fun with Fabric” workshop on June 28, a free gallery talk with feature artist Eleanor McCain on July 26 and a “Fabric Postcard” workshop on Aug. 9.

Please note that summer hours at the Ruth Funk Center will begin May 24. The center will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The center is next to Evans Library on the Florida Tech campus in Melbourne at 150 W. University Blvd. Admission is free.
