Florida Tech’s School of Rock Campers To Perform Free Concert Thursday

MELBOURNE, FLA. — After a week of intensive training and practice, 15 of the Space Coast’s most musically inclined youngsters will showcase the skills they learned at Florida Institute of Technology’s School of Rock summer camp by holding a free concert.

The concert will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 16, at Gleason Performing Arts Center on the Florida Tech campus in Melbourne.

Campers age 12 to 18 were organized into rock bands and learned two- or three-song sets and got to experience workshops, private lessons, group lessons, and other experiences. In addition to learning from Florida Tech music faculty, participants experienced workshops featuring Brevard County’s Jacie and the Knick-Knacks and Orlando-based Call to Start, which just finished playing on the Vans Warped Tour.

Now, the time has come to rock out – in public.

“The growing Music Program at Florida Tech is proud to pilot its first summer camp and excited to develop a new channel for reaching out to the Space Coast community, particularly its youth,” said Kevin Burke, an associate professor and the university’s director of music programs.

The School of Rock camps at Florida Tech will grow in the coming years, Burke added.

“We plan to cast a wider net on the community in the future by offering scholarships and more slots for campers on multiple weekly sessions in the summer,” he said.
