‘Star Trek at 50’ Focus of Public Science Lecture Aug. 26 at Florida Tech

Learn About the Science, Technology, Engineering of Popular TV Series  

 MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology’s next Public Science Lecture Series presentation will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, in the Olin Engineering Complex Auditorium (EC118). Scott Tilley, a professor in the Department of Engineering Systems, will present “Star Trek at 50.”

The free event is sponsored by the College of Science and is open to the general public.

Tilley will explore the science, technology and engineering of the long-running science fiction series. When “Star Trek” made its television debut in 1966, many of its exciting new concepts, such as personal communication devices, were purely fictional. Now, a half-century later, technology has made many of these concepts a reality.

“Find out what is fact and what is fiction,” Tilley said of his lecture.

Following the lecture, at approximately 9 p.m. and weather permitting, Florida Tech’s Student Astronomical Society will open up the 32-inch Ortega telescope for public viewing; three smaller telescopes will be on hand for “astronomical hors d’oeuvres.”
