Florida Tech Returns to Normal Operations, Resumes Regular Calendar Tuesday, Oct. 11

Florida Institute of Technology will return to normal operations and resume its regular calendar Tuesday, Oct. 11, following Monday’s Columbus Day holiday.

This weekend’s activities, including athletic events, remain suspended as Florida Tech and the Melbourne community clean up from the storm. It is anticipated that power will be restored to campus by Sunday evening.

Florida Institute of Technology is suspending all normal operations and canceling all classes effective 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, Oct. 5. This will permit faculty, staff and students time to make necessary arrangements to ensure their safety in advance of the approaching hurricane, as some areas are under evacuation orders.

Classes remain canceled and normal operations suspended Thursday and Friday, Oct. 6 and 7. Weekend activities, including athletic events, are also suspended. The university will resume normal operations Tuesday, Oct. 11, following Monday’s Columbus Day holiday.

Only essential Florida Tech employees, as notified by their supervisors, must report during these times.

Those individuals living off-campus should pay close attention to evacuation orders or other direction from local authorities. Those living on campus should follow the directions of Residence Life and Campus Security personnel. Everyone should be thinking about their personal emergency plans and preparing for the hurricane.

The Florida Tech administration continues to carefully monitor Hurricane Matthew. A final decision regarding Thursday and Friday classes and university operations will be announced no later than 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5.

The Florida Tech administration continues to monitor Hurricane Matthew. At this time, all classes and other university operations are proceeding as scheduled.

In the event of class cancellations, suspended university operations, evacuations, or other actions, communication with the university community will be issued through a number of outlets:

  • Official University E-mail
  • Hurricane Emergency Line (888-820-4636)
  • University Safety Alert Emergency Notification System (text and voice mail)
  • Social Media
  • WFIT-FM 89.5 FM
  • Local Media (Television and Radio)

In the event of an emergency situation, students living on-campus should follow the directions of representatives of Student Affairs, Residence Life, and Campus Security. Students should be thinking about their personal emergency plan.
