Florida Tech Named to President’s Community Service Honor Roll

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition an institution can receive for its commitment to community, service-learning and civic engagement.
Florida Tech earned placement on the 2015 Honor Roll for the General Community Service category for the ninth consecutive year. For the first time, the university also was listed in the Education category. The recognition, announced in late 2016, honors work done the previous year.
In the 2015-16 academic year, Florida Tech student, staff and faculty volunteers donated more than 17,845 community and campus service hours. These volunteers worked with 81 local and national organizations over that time. They collected nearly $21,000 through service and fundraising.
Local organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Children’s Hunger Project benefited from the campus community’s donations of time and talent, and for the first time Florida Tech offered an alternative spring break focused on global service.
“An impactful education extends well beyond the classroom, and offering our students the experiences and opportunities to help them on their path to becoming exemplary global citizens is a valued and essential part of our university,” said Florida Tech President T. Dwayne McCay.
The federal Corporation for National and Community Service has administered the award since 2006 in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education, Campus Compact, and the Interfaith Youth Core.
The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognizes institutions of higher education that support exemplary community service programs and raise the visibility of effective practices in campus community partnerships.
Inspired by the thousands of college students who traveled across the country to support relief efforts along the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, the Community Service Honor Roll also highlights the role institutions of higher education play in solving community challenges.
“By recognizing the institutions who are leading the way to achieve meaningful, measurable results for the communities they serve, we also highlight the vital role all colleges and universities play in addressing community challenges and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement,” said Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which administers the program.
