Florida Tech Shines as ‘Golden Age’ University in New Rankings

One of Only 14 U.S. Schools Honored on Prestigious List

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology is newly named to an elite list of international universities. Times Higher Education (THE), the respected, London-based provider of data and analytics on higher education, has recognized Florida Tech in its Golden Age University Rankings 2018, a compilation of 200 top institutions worldwide.

Florida Tech is one of only 14 U.S. institutions to make the list.

All of the universities recognized in this 2018 ranking were founded between 1945 and 1967. The list is so named to reflect what THE describes as the Golden Age in global higher education, characterized by rapid university expansion and increasing investment in research.

“To be recognized on this new worldwide honor roll from Times Higher Education is indeed gratifying,” said Florida Tech President Dwayne McCay. “It just goes to show that, when you adjust for our relatively young age in comparison to institutions that are hundreds of years old, Florida Tech shines as an outstanding U.S. university that is well on its way to emerging as a great global university.”

On the new top 200 list, Florida Tech was ranked in the 101-150 range. The list was developed by examining and rating 13 performance indicators grouped in five key areas: teaching environment, research environment, citation impact, knowledge transfer and international outlook, with the first three areas accounting for 90 percent of the ranking.

“As middle-aged institutions, universities in the Golden Age ranking are distinguished by having the benefit of both youth and age,” THE’s Ellie Bothwell noted. “They typically have had time to build up the quality of their research and their reputation but also tend to be more agile and innovative than many of their older counterparts.”

The Golden Age university list is published alongside THE’s Young University Rankings which honors universities under the age of 50. Florida Tech celebrates its 60th anniversary this fall.

The Golden Age ranking is merely the latest recognition of Florida Tech’s excellence from Times Higher Education. The university has been featured in both THE’s overall global university rankings as well as more specific lists. In 2016, for example, THE included Florida Tech among its list of 20 elite, smaller global universities. THE later named Florida Tech one of the top 150 universities in the United States.
