Florida Tech Earns High Marks in Wall Street Journal Ranking

2019 List with Times Higher Education
Based on Surveys, Federal Data

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Tech is among the top 50 universities in the Southern U.S. and an elite university nationally, according to the 2019 Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings.

The third-annual survey found Florida Tech was ranked 46 out of 286 colleges and universities across the southern United States. It was also listed in the top 22 percent of nearly 1,000 institutions nationally.

The rankings are based in part on a massive, 200,000-student Times Higher Education (THE) U.S. Student Survey from 2017 and 2018, as well as a smaller THE Academic Reputation Survey of 10,000 randomly chosen academics, and federal data from the National Center for Education Statistics.

The methodology is used to explore four key areas containing 15 indicators:

  • Resources, which includes faculty per student and research papers per faculty;
  • Engagement, which includes student engagement and recommendations;
  • Outcomes, which includes graduation rate, value added to graduate salary and academic reputation;
  • Environment, which includes student and staff diversity and student inclusion.

“The ranking adopts a balanced scorecard approach, with 15 individual performance indicators combining to create an overall score that reflects the broad strength of the institution,” Times Higher Education said in releasing the results.
