Florida Tech Faculty Present Strategy Research for the Business Community

Lunch Event Feb. 7 Inaugurates
Bisk College of Business Initiative

MELBOURNE, FLA. — A new public event from Florida Tech’s Nathan Bisk College of Business will explore the latest academic research on strategic management and execution – from a business person’s perspective.

Business Applied: Strategy in Action will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at the university’s Hartley Room in the Denius Student Center. The event, which will include lunch, is free, but RSVPs are required by Feb. 1 to Dawn Thompson at dthompson@fit.edu or by calling 321-674-7327.

This business research symposium will feature two presentations from business faculty members, each followed by audience Q&A.

The first topic will be “Eight typical mistakes expert strategists make – and how to avoid them!” Presented by Lars Hansen, an assistant professor of sport management and business strategy and co-chair of the event, the session will explore how recent research in the behavioral strategy category of strategic management has shown that biases and mistakes are a common occurrence, even among expert strategists.

A study Hansen conducted expands on this by identifying eight typical mistakes strategists make. The presentation highlights what these mistakes are and what practicing managers can do to avoid them in the strategy process.

The second presentation will be, “Strategy and capabilities without execution is like peanut butter and jelly without the bread.” Presented by Robert Keimer, assistant professor of management and program chair for online programs in the Bisk College of Business, the session will highlight an often underexamined area associated with strategy and supporting capabilities: execution.

Keimer will discuss a study he conducted that identified five critical drivers of execution in two successful companies and documented how those drivers combine to form a catalytic capability of execution — a capability that helps drive performance.

This inaugural gathering will be followed by a similar event in the fall semester, with two presenters discussing a common theme. Co-chair Jignya Patel, assistant professor of information systems, said the goal of the Business Applied series is to foster connections and interactions between people in academia and the business community.

“We are excited to engage with the community through this College of Business initiative,” she added.
