Florida Tech Professor Publishes Arabic Travel Writings Book
– Dr. Nabil Matar, head of the Florida Tech Dept. of Humanities and Communication, has just published In the Lands of the Christians: Arabic Travel
Writings in the Seventeenth Century. The book, from Routledge, New York, contains accounts of Arab travelers to Europe, and South and Central America. It
also includes a translation of letters sent by a Moroccan ambassador to friends in France.
The book is the author’s third in a series of studies about the relations of Europe and the Arab-Islamic world in the early modern period. Dr. MatarÕs
earlier books include Islam in Britain, 1558-1685 and Turks, Moors and Englishmen in the Age of Discovery. He is currently at work on Before Empire:
Britain and Barbary, from Peele to Dryden. The book will be published by the University Press of Florida. Dr. Matar’s study guide, Islam for Beginners, is
in its second printing.
