Student Earns Graduate Student Award

– At Florida Tech’s annual Honors Convocation, Klaus Dehmelt, a doctoral candidate in high energy physics in the university’s Department of Physics and Space Sciences, received the John E. Miller Award. The award is for excellence in graduate student
teaching and outstanding academic excellence. Dehmelt earned a diploma in physics-equivalent to a master’s degree- from the University of Hamburg in 1999
and was a research associate at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Mainz , 2000-2001.

Currently a graduate student assistant, in 2005, Dehmelt was honored with an Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award from the American Association of Physics
Teachers. He also earned notice for Outstanding Graduate Student Paper at the Florida Academy of Sciences 69th Annual Meeting that year. He has presented
his work at about 10 professional conferences and published dozens of research papers in professional journals. Dehmelt is on track to obtain his doctoral
degree in 2007.

The Miller Award was established in 1995 in memory of the university’s long-time vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Miller also briefly was
university president between the terms of Dr. Jerome Keuper, founding president, and Dr. Lynn Edward Weaver, the university’s third president.
