California Artist Presents Kimono as Quilt at Florida Tech on Feb. 3

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology will feature textile artist Yvonne Porcella in the presentation “Kimono as Quilt” on Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Gleason Performing Arts Center. This is the first of the Friends of Textiles Lecture Series in association with the opening of Kimono: a Transition to Modernity, which runs Feb. 2 – April 25 in the Funk Textiles Gallery. Tickets for the presentation are $10, general public; free to “Friends of Textiles” members and Florida Tech students.

Porcella’s “Kimono as Quilt” slide presentation describes the influence of the Japanese kimono on 20th century textile artists and on her own work. Her wearable art and modern quilts have been featured in major exhibitions, art galleries and museums around the world. She has taught and lectured throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe and Japan. The Smithsonian Institution acquired her quilt “Takoage” in 1994. This quilt and 300 other objects from the Smithsonian were included in a national touring exhibition honoring the 150th anniversary of the Smithsonian.

She is the author of numerous publications about design and technique, including Colors Changing Hue, published in 1994, and Six Color World, published in 1997.
