89.5 WFIT Radio Receives 2009 Hampton Dunn Media Award

MELBOURNE, FLA. — WFIT 89.5-FM, a service of Florida Institute of Technology, has received the 2009 Hampton Dunn Media Award for broadcasting “Florida Frontiers: The Weekly Radio Magazine of the Florida Historical Society.”

Hampton Dunn, a longtime journalist in newspaper and television, pioneered efforts to preserve Florida history through photographs. The Hampton Dunn Broadcasting Award is given annually to electronic media such as radio and television, recognizing outstanding audio or video programs, announcements, or other work promoting the knowledge of Florida history.

Established in 1856, The Florida Historical Society is the oldest cultural organization in Florida and the only state-wide historical society. Its mission is to collect and disseminate information about Florida history.

The award will be presented during the Florida Historical Society Annual Meeting held in Pensacola May 21-23. A luncheon will be held May 21. A bus leaving from Cocoa Beach May 20 will be available to transport those who are interested in participating in the awards ceremony. Registration information is available at myfloridahistory.org.

WFIT is sharing this award with National Public Radio stations WMFE, WUWF and WQCS. Each station will receive a plaque and share the $200 stipend.
