Florida Tech Invites Community to Celebrate Women’s History March 23

MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Florida Institute of Technology Alumni Association and the Women’s Business Center at Florida Tech will celebrate women’s history with “Writing Women Back into History,” a panel discussion and awards luncheon on March 23 at 11 a.m. The event will be held in the Denius Student Center second-floor Hartley Room and is open to the community.

The luncheon will feature keynote speaker, Monica Wofford as well as presentations of the Joan Bixby Women’s History awards and the Space Coast Women’s History award. To participate in the luncheon send an RSVP to mbeckett@fit.edu. The luncheon cost is $10; a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Brevard Women’s Center.

Panelists for the discussion will be Connie Chiles-Cooke, agent/president, State Farm Insurance Co.; Priscilla Griffith of the League of Women Voters; Rose Padrick, author of The Art of Grandparenting; Sue Kiley, director of programs for the Brevard Women’s Center; and Lynne Wright, author of More Than Petticoats: Remarkable Florida Women. Local authors will be on hand to display their books and autograph them.

Wofford is the author of Contagious Leadership as well as numerous other books and learning tools. She was nominated in 2008 as a Woman of Distinction in the category of business by the Citrus County Girl Scouts Council.

The Joan Bixby Award recognizes a Florida Tech student, staff and faculty member who enhance the climate for women’s participation and development on campus. It is named in honor of Bixby, a Florida Tech alumna, former university administrator and Melbourne resident. The Space Coast Women’s History Award will be presented to honor a woman in Brevard County who has shown leadership in sustaining the American spirit. “She will be someone who helps ensure that women are written back into history,” said Marjorie Beckett, assistant director of alumni affairs.
