Marine and Environmental Science Summer Camp Set for July 12 – 16

MELBOURNE, FLA. —The Florida Institute of Technology Department of Marine and Environmental Systems (DMES) offers a five day-long summer camp to explore the Indian River Lagoon and Brevard County’s coastal ocean and creeks. High school and middle school students are eligible to participate. The camp starts July 12, at 9 a.m., and ends July 16, at 3 p.m.

Campers will engage in hands-on activities that will include the examination of beach processes and consequences of nourishment, a boat tour of the Indian River Lagoon ecosystem, water quality testing, determination of nutrient concentrations in coastal waters, sampling and identification of estuarine and marine plankton, and seining seagrass beds to examine their role

as important habitats for a variety of fish and invertebrates.

Registration must be submitted by June 25. The registration fee for day campers is $375, which includes lunch, transportation to and from activities, snacks and all necessary equipment. For overnight campers, the fee is $675, which includes all the above plus lodging in university housing, supervision after camp hours, all meals and extracurricular activities. Ten percent off the fee is offered for additional siblings.

Day campers will meet every day, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and overnight campers can arrive as early as Sunday, July 11, at 4 p.m. and leave as late as Saturday, July 17, at noon.

The Department of Marine and Environmental Systems, part of the College of Engineering, offers degree programs in costal zone management, environmental sciences, marine science, meteorology, ocean engineering, Earth remote sensing, oceanography and environmental resource management.
