Florida Tech Junior, Rockledge High Graduate, Wins Two National Weather Forecasting Awards

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Titus Miles, Florida Institute of Technology junior in the Department of Marine and Environmental Systems, College of Engineering, won awards for excellent weather forecasting in the final two winter cities of the annual WxChallenge, the North American collegiate weather forecasting competition. Miles is also a 2007 Rockledge High School graduate.

Miles’ challenge was to predict the most accurate high temperature, low temperature, maximum winds and amount of precipitation over eight days in a given city. Miles won trophies for his victories in Cleveland, Ohio, and St. Louis, Mo., beating more than 1,500 other contestants over 16-days of forecasting. He is the first meteorologist or student meteorologist in contest history to win consecutively.

Steven M. Lazarus, Florida Tech professor in the Department of Marine and Environmental Systems, is Miles’ faculty adviser.

The WxChallenge is open to all undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students as well as higher-education faculty, staff and alumni.
