Friends of Textiles Lectures March 10, April 5
MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Institute of Technology will host two visiting speakers for the Friends of Textiles Lecture Series on March 10 and April 5. Both lectures will be at 6 p.m., with a reception at 5:15 p.m.
On March 10 Lynne Bruning, creator of exclusive wearable art e-Textiles, adaptive technologies and decorative fabrics will present Introduction to eTextiles in the Denius Student Center Hartley Room on campus.
eTextiles are fabrics that allow the embedding of computing, digital components and electronics. They are referred to as intelligent or smart clothing, allowing the incorporation of built-in technological elements in everyday textiles and clothes. eTextiles are not necessarily “wearable computing” because more emphasis is placed on hiding the technology within the fabric. While not part of the mainstream of fashion, the popularity of eTextiles is increasing today.
Fusing her education in neurophysiology, a master’s degree in architecture and a family history in textiles, “Bruning creatively cross-pollinates the worlds of science, textiles and fashion with her innovative, award-winning designs,” said Carla Funk, director of the Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts. On April 5 Bernice Steinbaum, Ph.D., will present The Art of Fashion and the Fashion of Art in the Gleason Performing Arts Center on campus. Her lecture will offer a fitting celebration the closing month of the Little Black Dress exhibit, according to Carla Funk, who calls her a “legendary gallerist and contemporary art maven.” She will discuss her 2009 exhibition, “The Art of Fashion and the Fashion of Art.”
Steinbaum was a gallery director for 27 years in SoHo, New York City, before moving her Bernice Steinbaum Gallery to Miami in 2000. President and founder of the Miami Art Exchange and president and founder of CAD (Community of Art Dealers in and near the Design District), Steinbaum has been a force in the exploding Miami art scene for the past 10 years. Her gallery boasts representing two MacArthur “Genius” award winners; five Guggenheim multiple National Endowment winners; and two Annenberg fellows, among other awards.
