Human-Centered Design Institute to Present First Seminar Feb. 18
MELBOURNE, FLA.—The new Human-Centered Design Institute (HCDi) at Florida Institute of Technology will offer its first seminar Feb. 18, from noon to 1 p.m. The seminar, located in Room 230 of the Crawford Building on campus, will feature John Hansman of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who will discuss “Automation Issues in Advanced Cockpits.”
Hansman will present the evolution of automation in transport aircraft cockpits and implications for human system integration. He will discuss the increase in mode awareness errors, giving examples of specific accidents and incidents, which have been attributed to mode error. The underlying cause of some of these human system integration issues will be covered as well as system design approaches to minimize human performance issues in critical aviation systems.
A professor of aeronautics and astronautics and director of the MIT International Center for Air Transportation, Hansman conducts research in the application of information technology in operational aerospace systems. He holds six patents and has authored over 250 technical publications. He has over 5,300 hours of pilot in-command time in airplanes, helicopters and sailplanes including meteorological, production and engineering flight test experience.
Hansman currently chairs the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration Research & Development Advisory Committee and is a member of the NASA Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and has received numerous awards. They include the AIAA Dryden Lectureship in Aeronautics Research, the Air Traffic Control Association’s George W. Kriske Air Traffic Award, a Laurel from Aviation Week & Space Technology, and the Federal Aviation Administration’s Excellence in Aviation Award.
Members of the HCDi include faculty, permanent and visiting research scientists and graduate students who conduct research in cognitive engineering, advanced interaction media, complexity analysis in HCD, life-critical systems, human-centered organization design and management and modeling and simulation.
The second seminar about healthcare as a safety-critical system is set for Feb. 25 and the third, about road safety, will be on March 4.
