Arts Series Commemorates Civil War with Showing of “Glory” and Commentary Oct. 14
MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Florida Institute of Technology Humanities and Communication Performing Arts Series will present “Glory: Remembering the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War in Film” Oct. 14. The film screening of “Glory” starts at 7 p.m. followed by a commentary by Robert Taylor, head of the Humanities and Communication Department at Florida Tech.
“Glory,” a film produced in 1989 starring Denzel Washington, Matthew Broderick and Morgan Freeman, is based on the American Civil War. It chronicles the trials of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the Civil War’s first volunteer company made up entirely of African American men.
After the screening, Taylor, one of the nation’s premier authorities on Florida military and Civil War history, will provide new insight and perspective on the film. He is president emeritus of the Florida Historical Society and advisory board member of H-Florida.
The event is free to Florida Tech students and subscribers to the Performing Arts Series. Admission for faculty, staff and the community is $15.
