Aerospace Engineering Faculty Member Earns National Faculty Adviser Award
MELBOURNE, FLA. —Florida Institute of Technology Associate Professor of Aerospace Engineering David C. Fleming earned the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) 2012 Faculty Adviser Award. He earned it for his leadership of the Florida Tech AIAA student branch and “outstanding contributions…as evidenced by the record of his student branch in local, regional and national activities.”
The award citation reads “For tireless efforts, calm personality and dedication to the profession.” Fleming will receive an engraved medal as well as a certificate and pin at the Jan. 10, 2012 awards luncheon. The event will be at the 50th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting to be held in Nashville, Tenn. Fleming will also receive a complimentary full conference registration.
Fleming was nominated by Florida Tech student Joe Bussenger, current president of the AIAA student branch, and fellow Florida Tech faculty member Y.I. Sharaf Eldeen. Eldeen said, “This historical first is a great honor for the university and for Dr. Fleming. Under his leadership for the past 15 years our chapter has won numerous local, regional and national first-place and leadership awards, including first- and third-place awards at the 2010 AIAA Regional Student Conference in Destin, Fla.”
Under Fleming’s leadership, the Florida Tech AIAA branch was named 1997-1998 Outstanding Professional Academic Organization at Florida Tech. In 2003, Fleming assisted with the student branch’s effort to build a model Wright Flyer as part of the Centennial of Flight celebration. The chapter presented the model at several elementary and middle schools.
At Florida Tech since 1996, Fleming earned a bachelor’s degree from MIT; and a master’s and doctoral degree from the University of Maryland, College Park.
