Florida Tech Autism-Related Workshop Teaches Independence for Teens and Young Adults Feb. 22
MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Institute of Technology’s School of Psychology offers free workshops of particular interest to parents, educators and professionals who deal with issues of autism. The workshops are scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Scott Center for Autism Treatment Seminar Room.
The Feb. 22 workshop is “Preparing Teens and Young Adults with ASD and/or Learning Differences for Independence: Perspectives from Students and Professionals.” It will provide the audience with a unique opportunity to hear autism-related topics addressed by a professional as well as by young adults.
The presenters are Debra Sloane, licensed staff psychologist, Florida Tech Counseling and Psychological Services; Jennifer Kolarik, career coordinator, College Internship Program; Sharona Sommer, student adviser, College Internship Program; Ryan Therriault, academic coordinator, College Internship Program; and College Internship Program students Zachary Smuckler and Dodge Meadows.
This workshop will help teens and young adults, parents and professionals learn how to be successful at independent living.A variety of topics and important life skills will also be discussed, which includes preparing for a career, managing a budget, handling social and emotional challenges, self-advocacy and daily living skills, and academic success strategies. There will be time for an open panel discussion and audience questions.
