New York Artist Leslie Wayne’s Sculptural Paintings on View at Foosaner Art Museum, Jan. 12 to March 17

MELBOURNE, FLA. – The Eau Gallie Arts District’s Foosaner Art Museum of Florida Institute of Technology will present the intricate, sculptural paintings of New York artist Leslie Wayne. The exhibition, I am Nature, opens Jan. 12 and continues through March 17. The exhibit opening will be accompanied by the free presentation, In the making: A visual lecture by Leslie Wayne, which will take place in the Harris Community Auditorium Jan. 12 at 10:30 a.m.

Inspired by her memories of growing up in scenic Southern California, and 19th Century romantic landscape painters, Wayne says she “captures the corporeal essence of nature … so that the narrative passages are packed into the interstices of each successive layer of paint.” Her artwork uses paint as form by pulling, scraping, folding, cutting and plastering it into many layers on her large, horizontal, multi-paneled works. Her art is said to express the forces of shifting tectonic plates, movement of water and man’s toxic impact on the environment.

Currently residing in New York, Wayne began her art studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and completed them at the Parsons School of Design in New York. After her move to New York she abandoned plein air painting to explore intuitive painting. Her art has been showcased in museums and galleries across the United States and as far away as Sweden. Wayne was the recipient of a New York Foundation of Arts Fellowship in Painting and two grants for her work.

The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston, S.C., granted permission to for their film, created to give insight into Wayne’s artistic process, to be shown at the Foosaner Art Museum. A full-color catalogue, also produced by the Halsey Institute, will be available for purchase in the museum’s store.
