Computer Science Summer Camps for High School Students Set for July 8-19

MELBOURNE, FLA.—How does Netflix recommend movies for you to rent? How do you program in Java? These will be some of the questions answered at Florida Institute of Technology’s computer science-related summer camps in July. The university’s Department of Computer Sciences offers two computer programming summer camp experiences, each five days long, to high school students. Camp Alpha is July 8-12 and Camp Beta is July 15-19. Both camps will meet daily, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on campus.

Camp Alpha participants, students with no programming experience, will learn about programming by telling stories, making movies and playing games using the revolutionary Alice software. Students will also interact with leading professors in the department.

Camp Beta participants, who have some programming experience, will learn how to solve real-life problems by designing and writing computer programs using the programming language, Java.

Each camp is limited to only 20 students. The registration fee of $150 per camp also provides lunch. Note that Google has made a limited number of scholarships available to campers of underrepresented groups.
