Florida Tech to Offer Certificate in Biomedical Engineering

MELBOURNE, FLA.—This fall Florida Institute of Technology will start beta testing a new, online, Certificate in Biomedical Engineering program. The certificate will be of value to a wide range of allied health care personnel and biomedical engineers.

The program will cover bioactive materials and health care applications, including tissue bonding and regenerative medicine and state-of-the-art medical implants. Their long-term viability, socio-economic implications and ethical considerations will be explored.

Graduates of the certificate program will be able to use their knowledge of biomedical science and tissue engineering to address the clinical challenges of medical technology in the context of an aging population.

Overseeing the program is world-renowned scientist Larry Hench. His career includes the development of Bioglass®, the world’s first synthetic material capable of long-term bonding with living tissue. This has become an essential component of numerous orthopedic devices and medical procedures, including bone grafting and regeneration procedures, medical implants, dental repair and other orthopedic applications. Hench has received numerous international awards and has published over 800 research papers and 30 books. He currently holds 32 United States patents.
