Florida Tech Students Organize Human Trafficking Awareness Event Feb. 28; Public Welcome

MELBOURNE, FLA—A group of Florida Institute of Technology students with a passion for the cause of stopping human trafficking and a wish to demonstrate that college students can make important community contributions, have organized an awareness event Feb. 28, 7-9 p.m. The event is sponsored by Florida Tech. S.T.O.P. (Strategic Trafficking Opposition Project) Human Trafficking will be held in the Gleason Performing Arts Center and will feature several key speakers on the topic. The public is invited to attend.

Sophomore Jake Honadle, a 2012 graduate of Satellite High School, and junior Josh Gordon from Pomona, Calif., are the coordinators.

“We believe that most people don’t realize what a local issue human trafficking is,” said Honadle. “Our goal is to bring awareness to the issue and prompt action from students and the community. Our speakers will equip the audience with the tools and information they need to aid law enforcement agencies in fighting the spread of sex trafficking in the local area.”

Speakers have been confirmed from the East Coast Human Trafficking Task Force, Tiny Hands International, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Department and Zonta International.

“We also hope this effort communicates to everyone that two students still in college can make a difference,” said Honadle.
