Phi Kappa Phi Holds Initiation Ceremony
Honor Society Inducts 145 Students, Eight Faculty
MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Florida Institute of Technology chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society recently inducted 145 students and eight faculty and staff members at its annual initiation ceremony.
The faculty and staff initiates are: Ismael Cremer, William Girton, Kevin B. Johnson, Caroline M. Johnston, Semen Koksal, Liam Mayron, Donn E. Miller-Kermani and Jennifer Christine Morin.
The chapter also presented its Chapter Scholar Award and its $1,000 grant, which recognizes not only a dedicated, talented, and bright student but someone who also embodies what it means to be a scholar in the true sense of the word.
The recipient was John D. Bocinsky. A junior studying biomedical engineering, Bocinsky has a 4.0 GPA and a full schedule of activities beyond the classroom, including serving as a high school assistant varsity soccer coach and a coach in Melbourne’s youth soccer leagues. A vice-captain on Florida Tech’s soccer team, recipient of the ‘top student’ honor this year from his academic department and member of the Sunshine State Honor Role the past two academic years, Bocinsky has also received Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math and Northrop Grumman scholarships. Bocinsky is an active member of the Newman Club on campus and leads a weekly small group for Catholic Campus Ministries. This summer, after beginning an undergraduate research project that will examine the use of gold nanoparticles and spectroscopy to treat cancer tumors, he will travel to Oxford as part of Florida Tech’s “Study Abroad” program.
Since its founding, Phi Kappa Phi has initiated more than one million members into its ranks, which comprise the best and brightest professionals and scholars from all academic disciplines. The society’s mission is “to recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.”
Founded in 1897 and headquartered in Baton Rouge, La., Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society. Phi Kappa Phi inducts annually more than 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni. The society has chapters on more than 300 select colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines. Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction also qualify.
