Registration Begins July 9 for Foosaner Center Art Classes and Workshops

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Registration opens July 9 for fall art classes and workshops at Florida Institute of Technology’s Renee Foosaner Education Center of the Foosaner Art Museum in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne.

The new term, which will feature one- to three-day workshops and multi-week classes, starts Sept. 9 and runs through Nov. 14. Pre-registration is required for all classes and workshops.

Workshops include “The Art of Huichol Yarn Painting with Marina Dempster” on Sept. 13; “Color My World! Applying and Making Porcelain Colored Slips” on Sept. 27-28; and “Plein Air Painting with Larry Leach” on Oct. 18.

Classes include a range of subjects for both adults and children, such as homeschool art group, art story time, glass, pottery, introduction to metals, figure drawing, fiber arts and acrylic and oil painting.

Among the new offerings in the fall will be “Creativity with Torn Paper,” with instructor Jeanne Diehl Shaffer. This class will allow students to tackle multi-media composition using various types of paper as the primary medium. Students will create a series of two-dimensional projects using cut and torn papers, weaving techniques, acrylics and colored and wax pencils.

Also new is “Glass Survey,” where instructor and working artist Fahan Sky McDonagh will introduce students to a variety of glass-making techniques. McDonagh, who has taught flameworking at Rochester Institute of Technology, will touch on fusing, slumping, bas relief and more during her 10-week class. This class is offered in conjunction with the museum’s upcoming exhibition, “Imagining Reality: Kathleen Elliot and Huguette Despault May,” on view from Aug. 23 through Oct. 12. Elliot’s imaginary botanicals are made of exquisitely formed, flameworked glass.

All classes and workshops will be held at the Renee Foosaner Education Center, 1520 Highland Ave., unless otherwise noted.

Prospective students who sign up for classes by Aug. 9 will receive an early-registration discount of up to 15 percent.Museum members also receive discounts on class tuition.
