Florida Tech a Top Global University, According to New 2015 Rankings

Center for World University Rankings Looked at 25,000 Institutions

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology is in the top 3 percent of all degree-granting institutions of higher education worldwide, according to the 2015 World University Rankings.

The comprehensive rankings from the Center for World University Rankings looked at more than 25,000 colleges and universities from around the world and used eight criteria to develop its list.

The criteria are:

  • Quality of education, measured by the number of a university’s alumni who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals relative to the university’s size.
  • Alumni employment, measured by the number of a university’s alumni who have held CEO positions at the world’s top companies relative to the university’s size.
  • Quality of faculty, measured by the number of academics who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals.
  • Publications, measured by the number of research papers appearing in reputable journals.
  • Influence, measured by the number of research papers appearing in highly-influential journals.
  • Citations, measured by the number of highly-cited research papers.
  • Broad Impact, measured by the university’s h-index, which tabulates the number of scholarly papers generated by faculty and the citations of those papers.
  • Patents, measured by the number of international patent filings.

The quality of education, alumni employment and quality of faculty criteria comprise 75 percent of the rankings, with the remaining areas each worth 5 percent.

This is not the first international accolade for the Melbourne, Florida-based university.

For the last two years, Florida Tech has been among the top 200 universities as ranked by Times Higher Education in its annual world university rankings, which includes schools from 28 countries.

And U.S. News and World Report, which has consistently ranked Florida Tech among its top tier universities, in 2015 named it the No. 2 National University in the country for fostering international student experiences.

“Florida Tech offers top-flight faculty, a challenging and rewarding classroom environment and an internationally known reputation as a premier research and technological institution,” said President and CEO Anthony J. Catanese. “We are pleased that our hard work and outstanding quality continues to earn us recognition not just in the U.S., but around the world.”
