Kohler Arts Center Curator Headlines Friends of Textile Lecture Nov. 17

Alison Ferris Will Speak About ‘Interdisciplinary Nature’ of Fiber Art

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology’s Ruth Funk Center for the Textile Arts will host Alison Ferris, curator of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, for its next Friends of Textiles Lecture Nov. 17 in the Denius Student Center’s Hartley Room on the Florida Tech campus.

A reception starts at 5:15 p.m. The lecture, titled “The Interdisciplinary Nature of Contemporary Fiber-based Art,” begins at 6 p.m.

The lecture is presented in conjunction with the center’s current exhibition, Light and Shadow: Contemporary Fiber Art by Hye Shin, which remains on view through Dec. 12.

Ferris, pictured below, previously served as assistant director of the Maine Arts Commission and was curator at Bowdoin College Museum of Art from 1996 to 2008, where she curated over 25 five exhibitions of contemporary art, including the acclaimed traveling exhibition The Disembodied Spirit. Ferris has served on grant review panels, lectured and taught at institutions across the United States, and written numerous essays and articles on contemporary art.

Individual tickets for the lecture are $10 for the general public and free to Friends of Textiles members, Florida Tech faculty, staff and full-time students. Tickets are available at the door.

Regular hours for the Ruth Funk Center are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. The center is next to Evans Library on the Florida Tech campus, 150 W.
