Florida Tech’s Tilley Co-Founds ‘Big Data Florida’ User Group

Membership is Free and Open to the Public; Next Meeting Feb. 8

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology professor Scott Tilley has co-founded a user group called “Big Data Florida.”

The term “big data” refers to extremely large datasets that pose challenges to traditional database systems and analysis techniques. Companies rely on the power of cloud computing to execute sophisticated algorithms that can detect patterns hidden in the data.

The non-profit group is for people interested in data science, business intelligence, predictive analytics, Hadoop, cognitive computing, no-SQL databases, machine learning and other issues related to big data.

Big Data Florida meets from 5:30-8 p.m. the second Monday of each month in the Link Multimedia Room (Room 204) of Evans Library on the Florida Tech campus, 150 W. University Blvd. in Melbourne.

Tilley serves as president of Big Data Florida. The two other founders are Vice President Daryl Heinz, an independent consultant, and Secretary/Treasurer Tauhida Parveen, a professor at Keiser University.

At the Feb. 8 meeting, Heinz will present “Big Data: Hadoop and Beyond.” His presentation will provide an overview of open-source, big-data frameworks that are currently available and a synopsis of where they might be applicable in your domain. The presentation is the second in a series of detailed talks, to be continued at upcoming meetings, on specific components of a big data framework distribution, such as the Hadoop Ecosystem (from the Apache Software Foundation) and the rapidly evolving set of capabilities known as the Berkeley Data Analytics Stack (from AMPLAB).
