Florida Tech’s Phi Kappa Phi Chapter Welcomes 223 Students, Faculty, Staff

Honors Society Holds 8th Initiation Ceremony Since 2008

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Florida Institute of Technology chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi recently held its eighth initiation ceremony, inducting 217 students and six faculty and staff members.

The faculty and staff initiates are: Darice Dawson, Christopher Durie, Veton Kepuska, Robert Marx, Matthew Ruane and Razvan Rusovici.

Since its founding, Phi Kappa Phi has initiated more than one million members into its ranks, which comprise the best and brightest professionals and scholars from all academic disciplines. The society’s mission is “to recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.”

The Florid Tech chapter was approved in fall 2008.

At the April initiation event, the chapter also presented two Chapter Scholar Awards, each with a $1,000 cash grant. This year’s recipients were Luisa Gomes, a junior enrolled in Mechanical Engineering, and Emmanuel Akpan, a senior in Chemical Engineering. They were selected for their academic achievement, service on and off campus, and vision for their careers.

Founded in 1897 and presently headquartered in Baton Rouge, La., Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society. Phi Kappa Phi inducts annually more than 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni. The Society has chapters on more than 300 select colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines. Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction also qualify.
