California Quilter Karen Rips to Hold Gallery Talk July 23 at Funk Center for Textile Arts

She is Featured in Current Exhibition, ‘A View Within’

MELBOURNE, FLA. — California native Karen Rips, a fiber artist featured in the current Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts exhibition A View Within, will offer a free gallery talk at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 23.

Rips will speak at the Center, located on the campus of Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne.

Rips’ current body of work, featured in A View Within, is focused on the interpretation of medical imaging through the use of X-rays, MRIs and CT scans. As such, it reflects how her 25 years working as a neonatal nurse play a significant role in her approach to art and how she views her surroundings.

Over the years, she has created work that has explored both the physical and the emotional aspects of the human body. Artistically, Rips has found herself abstracting the complex into the simplest of shapes, lines and spaces.

Rips is a Juried Artist Member of Studio Art Quilt Associates and the Surface Design Association. Her art has been exhibited across the nation.

The Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. The center is located next to Evans Library on the Florida Tech campus, 150 W. University Blvd. in Melbourne. For more information, visit http://textiles.fit.edu/ or call 321-674-8313.
