Washington Monthly: Florida Tech Among Best with ‘First-Gen’ Students

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology was the top university in Florida and No. 2 in the nation for the academic performance of its first-generation students, according to the recently released 2016 rankings from Washington Monthly magazine.
Florida Tech’s success in the “First-gen performance” category was featured in the magazine’s exclusive “Best Bang for the Buck” rankings of schools in the Southeast.
In Washington Monthly’s broader National Universities rankings, which examined more than 1,400 public, private nonprofit, and for-profit colleges and universities, Florida Tech was the Sunshine State’s top university for predicted median earnings, at more than $56,300, and median earnings 10 years after entering college, at more than $53,300.
Florid Tech was also the top Florida university and 9th university nationwide in the “ROTC rank” category.
The success of Florida Tech’s ROTC program was also a factor in the university’s top three Florida placement in the magazine’s “Service” ranking, as well, which uses several other areas, as well, including national service efforts, use of work-study funding on community service, percentage of students doing community service and number of hours of community service per student, to determine an overall score.
