Florida Tech Marks 60th Anniversary with Fireworks, Festivities

Thousands Come to Campus
for Fireworks Celebration 

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Tech celebrated the 60th anniversary of its founding Saturday with a fireworks display that drew upwards of two thousand revelers to campus.

The Founders Day event on the university’s Olin Quad included free ice cream and other giveaways, as well as fireworks coordinated by Zambelli Fireworks, one of the largest fireworks companies in the world.

Florida Tech began its existence with its first classes held Sept. 22, 1958, as Brevard Engineering College. Founded by space center scientist Jerry Keuper, the “night school for missilemen” was originally designed to offer graduate degrees for Cape Canaveral workers. The nonprofit, private university has since rocketed to global acclaim, honored as the #1 national university for international diversity. The university annually serves nearly 10,000 students at the Melbourne campus, at extended studies sites across the country and online. More than 60,000 alumni live around the world. The university routinely earns prestigious rankings from groups including U.S. News & World Report, Times Higher Education and Fiske Guide to Colleges.
