Florida Tech Mourns Loss of Dragster Driver Killed in Racing Accident

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Florida Tech community is mourning the passing of Katarina “Kat” Moller, who died Thursday night in a racing accident at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Fla. Moller, 24, from Sarasota, Fla., had taken Florida Tech courses toward a master’s degree in global strategic communication.

Moller was a member of the Larsen Motorsports racing team for five years. She was performing an exhibition run Thursday night in her American Dream jet dragster when she crashed.

“Our hearts are heavy today,” said Florida Tech President Dwayne McCay. “Kat was an inspirational young woman who brought a smile to everyone she met. Our prayers are with her family, friends and racing colleagues.”

Chris Larsen, CEO of Larsen Motorsports, expressed deep sympathy and heartbreak for the Moller family. “Kat has been part of our racing family for five years and we cannot begin to express our sorrow,” Larsen said. “Your prayers in this very difficult time are appreciated.”

Moller made her professional racing debut in 2014 in the Larsen’s Matrix System jet dragster, but had been racing for much of her life. At 11 years old, she began in junior dragster competitions.

In 2016, she earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of South Florida.

Funeral services are 6 p.m. Monday at Epiphany Cathedral Church in downtown Venice. Burial is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sarasota Memorial Park.
