Florida Tech’s Treat or Treat Rescheduled to Sunday, Oct. 20

Free Public Event for All Ages Features Haunted Houses, Games, Candy

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology’s Department of Residence Life announced that inclement weather has required moving its annual Treat or Treat Halloween event from Saturday to Sunday, Oct. 20.

The event will run from 2-6 p.m.

Treat or Treat will feature five themed haunted houses for a variety of ages, including one where guests can do actual trick-or-treating. There will also be bounce houses and other inflatables, activity booths from campus groups, community vendors, and cotton candy and lots of other sweet treats.

Treat or Treat is free and open to the public. The event will take place in the university’s Panther Plaza and Residence Quad off Country Club Road in Melbourne. It is hosted by Student Life and orchestrated by Florida Tech’s 55 resident assistants and five resident directors. Over 200 student volunteers will assist.

Five residence halls will feature walk-through haunted house experiences with movie themes. Some are scarier than others, and all will have dark areas, loud noises and theatrical effects.

  • Wood Hall will be decorated in an Aladdin theme. It is appropriate for all ages.
  • Campbell Hall will have a Jurassic World theme and is considered appropriate for ages 8 and up.
  • Grissom Hall will have a Men in Black theme and is considered appropriate for ages 8 and up.
  • Evans Hall will be the scariest house. Decorated around the movie IT, based on the Stephen King novel, this house will feature jump scares and student volunteers in costume chasing visitors, in addition to other effects. It is considered appropriate for ages 13 and up.
  • Shaw Hall will be a trick-or-treating house. Decorated as an enchanted forest, this house will allow very young children the opportunity to knock on doors for a trick-or-treating experience.

Children will not be denied access to any of the halls based on age, though they will be warned about the scariness of each respective haunted house before entering.

Nearby Panther Plaza will feature additional entertainment: Booths offering games and activities, an array of inflatables, and a costume contest with prizes. More than a dozen student clubs have confirmed their participation in the event.

There will also be a small pumpkin patch inside Florida Tech’s Ethos Community Garden on the Quad lawn. Children will be able to pick out pumpkins and paint them. There will also be hay bales for photo opportunities.
